Ethan Lowe is relishing his opportunity in North Queensland's first grade side.

Their season may have just ended, but promising Cowboys rookie Ethan Lowe says he is loving his time in Townsville and is looking forward to building on a promising debut season in 2015.

Lowe was a late call-up to what had been an unchanged Cowboys line-up in an unbeaten month after Newcastle-bound back-rower Tariq Sims was suspended.

Lowe said he didn't feel under any pressure to try and replicate what Sims brings to the side, saying the coaching staff were clear with what they wanted from him.

"I got told what to do – I know my job, I know my role in the team, I was confident I could do it," Lowe told NRL.com in the sheds after the game.

"I thought I did it pretty well. We're all told what our role is, you get told during the week 'this is what we want you to do'. The first 25 we didn't really do what we wanted to do, then after that we got stuck in, were able to turn it a bit," he said of the team's amazing comeback from 30-0 to 30-all.

Lowe is contracted to the Cowboys until the end of 2015.

"I've got another pre-season up here, another year then see what happens after that, but I'm loving it up here," he said.

"There's been a couple of games I wasn't really happy with but all in all I think I've done all right, I've built a platform for next year so hopefully I can have a big pre season and build on that and try and come back better next year."

Lowe said he has benefited from the leadership of some of the side's more experienced forwards, and plenty of direction from the halves.

"We've got a great back rower here in Coops [Gavin Cooper], I'm always happy to have a talk to him, he's always happy to give me some advice, either defensively or in attack, he's great. We've got some of the best halves in the world here in Robbie [Lui] and Johnno [Thurston] and it makes my job a lot easier running off those two.

"JT's a great leader, he's a great captain, same with Thumper [Matt Scott] – he leads from the front, he does all that hard work for us. They're great captains."

He said it wasn't about trying to replicate what any of the others produced so much as focusing on his own skill set.

"I just try and do my best, I've got my own sort of skills I know I can do and that's what I try and do is just my job to the best of my abilities – but it's good learning of Coops and people like that, we've got some great people here."
