Billy Slater was one of a number of NRL stars with a tip for the 2014 Melbourne Cup.

It's billed as the race that stops a nation and rugby league stars were quick to get in on the act, fearlessly backing their nags or shamelessly asking for advice on social media.

You could do worse than to listen to the advice of Melbourne Storm superstar Billy Slater, a former track rider for Gai Waterhouse and keen racing enthusiast. He named Lucia Valentina as his pick for the big race, although he also likes Mutual Regard.

Rabbitoh Dave Tyrell is having an each-way look at Mutual Regard and Signoff, while Broncos legend Alfie Langer has his money on race favourite Admire Ratki.

The Broncos have a host of players ready to take on the bookmakers, with Kangaroos duo Ben Hunt and Corey Parker both backing Lucia Valentina.

On the 'no-idea' side of the ledger is a host of NRL players, reverting to social media in a desperate attempt to pick a winner and a tip they can call their own.

Meanwhile two-time premiership winning forward Joe Galvao is more interested in riding the mechanical variety at the pub than actually laying down his hard-earned.

Finally, we couldn't find a legitimate tip from Kangaroos captain Cam Smith, but that didn't stop his Melbourne Storm colleagues from having a laugh at their captain's expense.
