The Sydney Roosters have signed Raiders utility Matt McIlwrick to a one-year contract, after yesterday releasing forward Frank-Paul Nuuausala to Canberra.
McIlwrick has played 19 games for Canberra since making his NRL debut in 2012, mostly as part of the hooking rotation, and provides much-needed depth to the role for the 2013 premiers who are likely to be without first-choice rake Jake Friend (shoulder surgery) for the early stages of 2015.
They have also lost back-up hooker Heath L'Estrange (Dragons) from their 2014 squad and parted ways with utility Daniel Mortimer (Titans) during 2014. They had looked to have picked up Titans hooker Matt Srama, only to see Srama elect to stay on the Gold Coast.
"We are pleased to have secured the services of Matt, who we view as the ideal back-up hooker to Jake Friend," said Sydney Roosters recruitment manager Peter O'Sullivan.
"With explosive speed around the ruck and high work-rate in defence, as well as his ability to slot into lock, Matt will add some great depth to our interchange and we look forward to his developing as part of our squad."
McIlwrick thanked the Raiders for their support in his career and expressed his delight to be linking with the Roosters.
"The Raiders brought me over from Christchurch and gave me a chance to chase my NRL dream and for that I will always remain thankful," McIlwrick said.
"I'll never forget my time at the club and I thank everyone who has helped me along the way.
"I have some wonderful friends and some great memories to take with me and I also want to thank the members and fans for their support in my time with the club."
