Broncos winger Lachlan Maranta will miss the first two months of the 2016 Telstra Premiership after fracturing a bone in his wrist that will require surgery on Wednesday.

The injury occurred at training last Thursday but the extent of the injury wasn't known until Tuesday with the specialist confirming the need for surgery and 10-12 weeks on the sidelines.

In addition to missing Brisbane's World Club Series game against Wigan and the start of the NRL season, Maranta will now also have to withdraw from the World All Stars team for which he was selected by club coach Wayne Bennett.

Maranta joins Johnathan Thurston, Robbie Farah and Tyson Frizell as All Stars selections who have since made themselves unavailable for the game at Suncorp Stadium on February 13.

"This morning the doctor basically told me I had to get the surgery," Maranta said.

"I wasn't shocked going in – I had tried to be positive but in the back of my mind I knew I had done something."
