The NRL welcomed the Queensland Government's increased commitment towards a new CBD football stadium at Townsville.

The Queensland Government announced it would increase its investment in the project from $100 million to $140 million.

NRL CEO Todd Greenberg said the game would contribute a further $10 million to help make the stadium a reality.

"The Cowboys are the reigning Premiers and they deserve a world class stadium" Mr Greenberg said.

"The State and Federal Governments made it clear that they wanted a commitment from the game before they would further invest in the stadium – and we have given that commitment.

"This project will bring benefits across northern Queensland with up to 1650 new jobs created.

"So not only will our fans benefit from a better experience in a new stadium but there will be a real boost for the local economy."

Mr Greenberg said the NRL and Cowboys would continue to work with all levels of government to secure the balance of funds required to proceed with the CBD stadium.
