NRL.com experts Matt Elliott and Brad Fittler debate whether the NRL competition is wide open after a comment from Bulldogs coach Des Hasler saying anyone could win the Telstra Premiership.

Elliott agreed with Hasler, saying at the start of the year it was a two horse race, but is now of the belief any team could win it.

"At the start of the year, it was definitely going to be a repeat of the Grand Final, but holding and maintaining momentum through the NRL season is really tough, I couldn't tell you definitely who is going to win it," Elliott said on Friday Fever.

But Fittler, with the weight of history, believes only three teams can lift the Provan Summons trophy on the first Sunday in October.

"In 18 years, the same team hasn't backed up and won the comp, no one has won it outside of the top four," Fittler said.

"It's a pretty good history, so if you take the Cowboys out, it is going to be one of three sides, Cronulla, Melbourne or Canberra. I don't think it is wide open, I think it is up to two or three teams max."
