NRL match review committee coordinator Michael Buettner has explained why Broncos forward Matt Gillett was charged with tripping on the weekend while his teammate Adam Blair was not.
Gillett has pleaded guilty to a grade one tripping charge over an incident involving Johnathan Thurston in the 78th minute of Brisbane's semi-final loss to North Queensland on Friday night.
Gillett will avoid a suspension for the charge, which was a straightforward grade one incident according to Buettner.
"Matt Gillett I guess ended up in an awkward position, beaten on the inside by Thurston," Buettner says in today's Finals Week 2 NRL HQ Match Review video on NRL.com.
"The leg was raised by Gillett, making contact to the leg of Thurston who fell to the ground. A penalty was given, and it fell well within the realm of what constitutes a grade one tripping charge."
Gillett's charge contrasted with a similar incident involving Broncos forward Adam Blair, who also made contact with Thurston during the game.
"Again, in the footage you can see Adam Blair does make contact to the leg of Thurston, who trips over," Buettner says.
"He positioned himself, Adam Blair, in front of Thurston similar to that of a basketball move where the screening takes place.
"So because there was no reckless or intentional action on his behalf - basically he just stood his ground, Adam Blair - there was no charge applicable to him."
