Panthers top Waiheke pool
Penrith's young brigade made it a perfect three-from-three with a gutsy 22-4 win over a Titans side missing headline-act Jarryd Hayne whose tournament could be over after injuring his knee on day one.
John Olive proved too big and strong from close range to open the scoring for the Titans after two minutes before a burrowing Zach Dockar-Clay wriggled over in the bonus zone to give Penrith the lead.
A flying Dylan Edwards took advantage of a Jed Cartwright offload to open up a seven-point cushion at the break, although the Titans blew a great chance to hit back on the stroke of half-time when Leivaha Pulu spilled the ball over the line.
The near misses continued after the break when Tyronne Roberts-Davis failed to ground a grubber after some terrific lead-up play, before Pulu was denied by an incredible cover tackle by Edwards who drove the bigger man into touch centimetres short of the line.
Having survived raid after raid, the Panthers iced the game with two minutes to go through Sione Katoa before Sitaleki Akauola touched down to secure top spot in the Waiheke Pool.
Panthers 22 (Zach Dockar-Clay, Dylan Edwards, Sione Katoa Sitaleki Akauola tries; 2 goals) def. Titans 4 (John Olive try). Half-time: 11-4
