Cowboys winger Antonio Winterstein was injured in the first half of his side's clash with the Broncos.

The North Queensland Cowboys will welcome back premiership-winning winger Antonio Winterstein in this week's clash with the Newcastle Knights.

Winterstein was injured in the Cowboys' Round 2 game against Brisbane, and Cowboys coach Paul Green is glad to have the experienced winger back in his side.

"It's good to get a guy with [Antonio's] experience back. Whilst our young guys have done a great job for us… those guys with experience are very valuable for us at the moment," Green said.

"He's played plenty of NRL, he's pretty tough that's what we need at the moment some of those older, more experienced, hard-head NRL players." ‌‌

‌John Asiata has been named in the number six jersey, with Morgan being moved to halfback, and Green is confident Asiata can replicate his impressive second-half performance against St George Illawarra last week.

"I think he'll definitely be better for the experience, he'll know what to expect but he did a really good job for us last week," he said.

"I think it's important for Morgs (Michael Morgan) to understand that he's probably our most experienced guy in there and he needs to take some ownership there."
