Australian Kangaroos Head Coach, Mal Meninga, joins host Scott Sattler to discuss his experiences and opinions on coaching in rugby league.

Meninga speaks about his time in the Canberra Raiders job, how he developed his coaching philosophy, what the key focus areas should be for grassroots coaches, engaging with players, and his experiences coaching the Queensland State of Origin team.

He also discusses lessons learnt from other coaches – specifically Arthur Beetson, Wayne Bennett and Tim Sheens, how to develop values and culture, and explains how the Kangaroos' RISE concept came about.

"It's about continual development," Meninga says about how to improve as a coach.

"It's about continually learning how to be a better coach and how players can become better players and better people."

On creating a culture at NRL and grassroots levels, Meninga says: "You have to set some values around behaviour."

"Its values first, then you talk about culture, then you talk about how you're going to play."
