The NRL has thrown its support behind Bowel Cancer Awareness as part of an ongoing initiative to increase education around the cancer screening process.

Bowel Cancer is Australia's second most common cancer in men and women.

Sadly, on average, bowel cancer claims the life of an Australian approximately every two hours.

These figures have caused the NRL and legend of the game Mario Fenech to lend a voice to increase education about the ease of getting screened to ensure the best success rate of avoiding bowel cancer.

"Whilst bowel cancer is a major concern, when detected early, 90 per cent of bowel cancers can be successfully treated," Mr Fenech said.

"People may think that the screening process is invasive and will put off getting checked, but that couldn't be further from the truth.

"Taking potentially life-saving action is as easy as visiting your local GP, asking for a bowel cancer referral and picking up your free screening kit from your local chemist.

"The screening process can be done in the privacy of your own home and that's it.

"Peace of mind sure beats a potentially deadly outcome."

The NRL, together with the Gut Foundation, is encouraging people to follow Fenech's lead and ask their GP for a bowel cancer referral next time they visit their doctor.

Step 1: Visit your GP and ask for a referral for a bowel cancer screening test
Step 2: Visit a local pharmacy and pick up your free bowel cancer screening test
Step 3: Collect a sample in the privacy of your own home
Step 4: Post the test to pathologist indicated on packaging or drop off at your doctor
