Here's how England players rated in their World Cup final loss to Australia at Brisbane Stadium.

1 Gareth Widdop
Constantly targeted by the Aussies physically but was a constant threat at fullback. Asked to move to the halves for the final 20 minutes and continued to press the Australian defence. Copybook blotted by a couple of second half errors. 7/10

2 Jermaine McGillvary
England's player of the tournament racked up the metres in the opening 40 and got better in the second, pulling off a crucial intercept with his team under the pump and finishing with a massive 215 metres and eight busts. 8/10

3 Kallum Watkins
Made a hash of a first-half try-scoring chance but sparked into the life in the second half with an important line break and finished with 176 metres to go with 25 tackles and four busts. 7/10

4 John Bateman
A quiet end to a quiet tournament for the England left centre. Made the fewest metres of the England three-quarter line and came up with a couple of errors. 5/10

5 Ryan Hall
Saw very little quality ball as England continued to favour the right edge in attack but did his best to get involved and still racked up 172 metres. 6/10

6 Kevin Brown
Missed a tackle on Boyd Cordner for what turned out to be the only try of the match and struggled in attack before being substituted midway through the second half. 3/10

7 Luke Gale
A series of mighty torpedo kicks kept England in the first-half arm-wrestle. Tenacious in defence as well but short kicking game could have been more effective as England struggled to find points. 7/10

8 Chris Hill
Tirelessly carted the ball into the teeth of the Kangaroos defence and bent them back on almost every carry. One of England's best. 8/10

9 James Roby
Crisp service and rugged defence. Comfortably got through the 80 minutes in the absence of Josh Hodgson. May not have won them the game but certainly didn't lose it for them. Made a match-high 56 tackles – with zero missed. 8/10

10 James Graham
Clearly hampered by a nasty head clash at the very start of the game but, in true James Graham fashion, battled on manfully regardless for 58 minutes of determination and grit. 7/10

16 Ben Currie
Promoted to start with Sean O'Loughlin out injured and got through 80 minutes, including plenty of tackling, though his running game didn't worry the Kangaroos. 6/10

12 Elliott Whitehead
A monster effort in defence with 52 tackles. 7/10

11 Sam Burgess
Assumed the captaincy in the absence of the injured Sean O'Loughlin. Forced off early with a dislocated finger but returned to produce some bone-jarring hits and powerful carries. 7/10

14 Alex Walmsley
Another eye-catching performance off the bench for the St Helens big man. Could arguably have done with more than 29 minutes on field. 6/10

15 Tom Burgess
Unfortunate error right after returning in the second half but carried the ball strongly otherwise. 5/10

17 Chris Heighington
Just 22 minutes for the veteran Shark-turned-Knight but still got through 80 metres with ball in hand. 5/10

18 Jonny Lomax
Brought on at fullback for the final 24 minutes and added some spark. 4/10
