Former St George Illawarra Dragons and Newcastle Knights second rower Alex McKinnon and wife Teigan are expecting their first child.

The couple took to social media on Thursday to announce they will be parents, with the baby due in October.

They proudly held up an ultrasound photo image of baby McKinnon.

Baby Mckinnon coming soon @teiganmckinnon ❤️.

Alex and Teigan married six months ago, three years after he broke several vertebrae in his neck during a NRL match between the Knights and the Melbourne Storm at AAMI Park.

McKinnon spent several months in rehabilitation after being diagnosed with quadraplegia.

He continued to work in the Knights' football department but his year has signed with Fox Sports' rugby league team as a reporter and commentator.
