The struggling Canterbury Bulldogs have received a major blow, with high-priced recruit Kieran Foran to miss the remainder of the season with a toe injury.

Foran, who joined the Bulldogs on a three-year deal from the New Zealand Warriors in 2018, will undergo surgery on Tuesday.

The Bulldogs expect the premiership-winning player and former New Zealand international to be in a boot for six weeks before beginning a rehab program after that.

He will need to have the ligaments in a toe on his left foot reconstructed after the first treatment plan failed to help heal the injury.

The 3-8 Bulldogs are in 15th spot on the NRL ladder as they prepare for Saturday's clash with the Knights in Newcastle.
