Su'A deal caps trifecta of Brisbane re-signings
The acquisition of back-rower Jaydn Su'A until the end of 2020 on Wednesday capped a trifecta of big-name signings for Brisbane as they ramp up solidifying their long-term roster.
The 20-year-old forward had attracted interest from several clubs but declared to NRL.com a fortnight ago he was set to re-sign with Brisbane and secure a starting spot in the back-row.
Su'A's re-signing follows on from 18-year-old prop Payne Haas committing his future to the Broncos until 2024 and outside back Jamayne Isaako until 2022.
"I was always pretty confident of keeping them," coach Wayne Bennett said when reflecting on a successful week in the recruitment market.
"I am as wary of our future as we are of our present, but they are our future and it puts us in pretty good shape."
The New Zealand-born Su'A was the youngest starting forward to debut for the Broncos when he lined up as an 18-year-old against the Wests Tigers in 2016 in an impressive 80-minute performance.
A product of Logan Brothers, Su'A has come through the Souths-Logan nursery and a development pathway to under 20s, the Intrust Super Cup and then into the NRL.
Su'A was on the cusp of Queensland Maroons selection this year before breaking his ankle in the round 18 clash with the Warriors, his 15th Telstra Premiership game of the season.
Bennett confirmed Su'A had undergone an operation and would not be back this year.
The Broncos coach said Su'A was "tough for a young fella" and a player of quality.
"The edge forwards have a fair bit of responsibility and he handles that pretty well," he said.
"He has got good footwork and a good skill level. Toughness is a part of our game and he's got plenty of it."
Su'A said he was delighted to cap his year with a new deal and vowed to bounce back from his injury in 2019.
"I have two big years ahead of me now and I am really excited," he said.
"Overall in the 2018 season I really enjoyed playing each and every week. That was my main goal for this year.
"Although I didn't finish the season, I will be back."
