Feldt reveals Cowboys given free rein by Green

The North Queensland Cowboys will boast one of the most exciting back threes in the NRL next season and winger Kyle Feldt says a release-the-shackles edict by coach Paul Green is set to unleash their attacking best.

Feldt was the Cowboys leading try scorer in 2018 with 14 on the right wing, despite not having right-side five-eighth Michael Morgan on deck for most of the season.

The Cowboys scored just 73 tries last season and for the second consecutive year scored less than 500 points, after six 500-plus years before that.

Feldt, who is set to partner new signings Nene Macdonald and Ben Barba at the back, said Green has told the players that he wants them to be "less predictable and less structured".

"It is more about us playing with our eyes-up and when we see space Greeny is all about taking it off-the-cuff," Feldt said.

"We are really looking forward to it and the big boys have got more opportunity to throw the ball around and sling it wide to us out in the backs.

"We are doing a bit [at training] this week, and more next week, on team stuff so it is going to be interesting to see how it goes."

Feldt said that approach should suit the side and "especially Benny Barba at the back".

"He's coming off a really good season in Super League and back when he was playing in the NRL he was lightning quick and very hard to handle," Feldt said.

"It is going to be very exciting to be out on the wing watching him in the middle, and hopefully get a few long balls off him."

Feldt will also welcome competition from Macdonald for the race to be leading try scorer next season,

"We put a little wager on it last week. It makes the season more interesting,” Feldt said.

"With the player he is, the stuff he can do and the way he can move his body ... hopefully I can get the money."

Assistant coach Josh Hannay has no doubt that the Barba-Macdonald-Feldt combination at the back offers "serious potential and a fair bit of potency with their attacking prowess".

"They are wonderful athletes and Nene and Feldty are probably two of the best wingers in the comp with their aerial ability and both wonderful finishers who score tries they have no right to score," Hannay told NRL.com.

"I have also been super-impressed with what I have seen from Ben Barba on the training field the last five weeks. Any time we do anything that requires a demonstration of skill he just has it in spades. His skill level is through the roof."

Hannay said Feldt had returned to pre-season training in "super shape" and was set to thrive next season.

The Cowboys winger topped the error count for the side in 2018, with 27, an area that he can still improve on.

"Feldty's really matured as he has gotten older and is already one of the best wingers in the competition and most dynamic athletes in the NRL but I think he will only take his game to greater levels over the next couple of years," Hannay said.

"In years gone by he has had a bad error in him and sometimes that bad error could lead to a bad game, and potentially a couple of bad games. That is the one area he can get better and the only Achilles heel in his game."
