Red hot Walker rides his lucky streak for all it's worth

The NRL's leading tryscorer Cody Walker grabbed a double in the space of three minutes in his side's 38-6 win over Brisbane on Thursday night as he continued his uncanny knack of being in the right place at the right time.

The first four-pointer came after fullback Alex Johnston lost the ball but got a toe on it to kick ahead with Walker in support.

The second was a moment of solo brilliance, grubbering ahead on the final play through a wave of Broncos before a chase and regather through traffic to pluck the ball off a remarkable bounce to score his ninth try of the year.

"I just sort of anticipated for it to bounce on its edge and it sort of came off," a beaming Walker shrugged when asked about the amazing grab post-match.

"I'll take them any day of the week!

"I took a guess, if Darius Boyd got the ball I believe AJ (Alex Johnston) would have tackled him. You don't have time to think to be honest, you're just running and it came off."

That second try sparked a 'goanna' celebration from Walker as a tribute to retired club legend Greg Inglis.

That was followed by less athletic goannas from Adam Reynolds and John Sutton following tries of their own, with Walker joking he could lay claim to the best goanna while Sutton's old-man hips almost prevented him getting up afterwards.

"I think it's quite fitting with the occasion that we send off a great legend like GI, he's done a lot for Indigenous communities, the Redfern community," Walker said.

"I just thought it was a great touch and quite fitting that we got the goanna out.

"It wasn't planned, just in the moment. It's obviously a big occasion for Greggy, there was a big crowd there with the Greg face masks, they were everywhere so to have a crowd like that on a Thursday night's unreal.

"It just goes to show what type of legend Greggy is and what type of legacy he's left behind."

With each dominant performance he delivers, the Origin hype around Walker grows louder but the man himself – while happy to have his form noticed – isn't sure what to make of the debate.

"It's obvious I really want to play and I'd love to be in that arena but it's not my main focus. I want to play good footy for the Rabbitohs," he said.

"I sound like a broken record but these teams get picked by club form, I've got to keep doing that… I don't know what else to say."
