Stat Attack: Walker on track for record try-scoring season

Rabbitohs five-eighth Cody Walker's blistering start to 2019 has him on track to record a feat that has not been seen for more than three decades.

Walker's nine tries in eight games has him atop the NRL try-scoring list. Broncos winger Corey Oates is just behind on eight after a third of the season.

If Walker can score enough four-pointers to stay atop the list by season's end he would become the first halfback or five-eighth to top the scoring for a season since Bulldogs legend Terry Lamb back in 1987.

If he maintains his current rate of scoring, the most prolific season by a half would be theoretically in range, with Phil Blake's 27 tries in 24 games for Manly in 1983 having proven unmatchable over the last 35 years.

Even if he slows down, Walker is likely to be the best scoring half in recent times. Since 2013 no half has finished with better than Michael Morgan's 15 in 23 games in the Cowboys' 2015 premiership season.

No half in that time has had better than six tries in the first eight rounds with the exception of Anthony Milford, who had eight in eight rounds in 2016 but finished with just 14 tries in 26 games that year.
