His team did it the hard way and almost threw away what looked like being an easy win but Wests Tigers coach Michael Maguire's belief in his team is unwavering.

Benji Marshall's golden point field goal sealed a 27-26 win and broke a three-game losing streak in process and Maguire was keen to focus on the positives of a tough road victory.

“We came here to find a way to win but I didn't expect it was going be that way,” Maguire said.

“I've got a real belief in this team. And they need to make sure they find that out of this game.

"If they play the way they’re capable of then there's no reasons why we can't make sure that we start to get wins off the back of the things we're been doing.”

The Tigers raced to an 18-point lead inside the first 30 minutes - a stark contrast to the previous week where they were held scoreless for the full 80 by Canberra.

That's when Maguire feels complacency set in and the Cowboys were invited back into the game.

“We've shown some really good signs like we did at the start of the game, but we've got to learn how to play for the 80 minutes," he said.

“We’ve got to fix that. We're at this level now where you just can't be doing that.

"It’s very obvious you've got to be playing an 80-minute game and I can say that many, many times and that's up to the team and myself to make sure that we do that.

Marshall field goal seals it for Wests Tigers

"There’s pretty simple lessons out of that game. We were in control then we gave the game away but it was good to see the boys fight for each other and obviously find the win.

“That was something that we spoke about, to find that for each other. When you go through a little bit of adversity and we're not getting the wins like we'd like, we had to find something.”

In the end it was 34-year-old Marshall who iced the win and reminded everyone why he still has plenty to offer - to the Tigers and New Zealand at Test level.

“Benji's been showing a lot of great signs in his game and the way he's leading the team and I think what he's done in the last couple of months, I've really seen him grow," Maguire said.

The win lifted the Tigers into eighth spot ahead of a highly anticipated showdown with the Rabbitohs at Bankwest Stadium next Thursday.
