Watkins to use NRL arrival to push for spot on Lions tour

England international Kallum Watkins is planning on making an immediate impact in the NRL in order to press his claims for selection in the Great Britain team to tour New Zealand and Papua New Guinea in late October.

Watkins arrived on the Gold Coast earlier this week to join the Titans and test his credentials in the NRL following a decorated Super League career with the Leeds Rhinos.

Not yet back to his best following ACL surgery last year, the 28-year-old centre says the Lions tour at the end of the year is providing extra motivation to perform in the NRL.

“To come here and test myself in the best competition is something that I needed and something that is going to push me even more,” Watkins told Titans TV.

“The thing this year is Great Britain and it will be the first time in a long, long time that that’s happened.

“The opportunity to do that is something that I have dreamt of doing.

“I’ve played for England before but it’s something a little bit different with Great Britain and an opportunity to do that would be massive.”
