Valentine Holmes has been added to the New York Jets' practice squad for the season that starts on September 9.
A day after he failed to make the 53-man squad, Holmes was one of seven players included in a group that will work with the main squad each week to prepare for matches.
One of four players in this year's NFL International Player Pathway Program, the former Sharks, Maroons and Australia representative had eight receptions for 85 yards in preseason action.
Holmes' work as a running back - the position he is listed at - was less effective.
He will be the 11th member on the Jets' practice squad and will be ineligible to be activated during the 2019 season.
Holmes latest news comes after he had had five catches for 55 yards to finish the teams final practice match before the announcement as the Jets' leader in that category.
After missing out on the Jets' 53-man squad, rival NFL teams had a chance to sign him.
He will now remain in New York and continue to learn the game.
Prior to the weekend decisions, Holmes had indicated he was keen to stick around even if he did not make the 53-man squad.
The Jets face fellow AFC East division side Buffalo in their season opener.
