Ask any person about their sudden weight gain and it's more than likely to become a rather awkward conversation.

However, ask someone about their recent weight loss and most of the time you get a much more comfortable conversation.

That's the case for Kiwi Ferns and Brisbane Broncos forward Amber Hall, who has endured a rollercoaster 12 months training her way back into the elite rugby league ranks.

Hall was 18 when she made her international debut for New Zealand in 2013 but it all began to unravel when she injured her Achilles returning home the following year at club level.

"I went to the doctors and had to weigh myself and his original number had 108 kilos when I played for the Kiwi Ferns," Hall tells NRL.com.

"When he updated me it came back I was 128. I was around that same weight in October last year."

Hall isn't out to chase any sympathy.

She was open to her guilt, admitting to eating at least five main meals per day and indulging in up to two blocks of chocolate as part of snacks in between.

"When I did my Achilles I started eating and relaxing, footy went on the back-burner," she said.

"I was still in school as a 17-year-old when I got picked for the Kiwi Ferns. We flew to England and I'd just turned 18 a couple of days earlier.

"It was a good experience but I was youngest in the team so felt inexperienced. You could say I wasn't ready but I think I achieved a lot in a short space of time and took it for granted."

What's new for NRLW?

The now 24-year-old wouldn't specify what flicked a switch for her to begin to shed weight but indicated her family had played a massive part.

Hall has dropped 22 kilos in just over a year. She started by trimming back to three meals a day and ditched the volume of daily chocolate consumption.

"I just couldn't keep going the way I was," she said.

"I watched the NRLW last year thinking how I could've been there. People had been in my ear saying that. I did it for myself more than anything.

"My cousins started running stairs but I would walk it. As time went on I did more and it turned into a jog. Now it's gone from general fitness to week-to-week."

Hall has impressed Broncos coach Kelvin Wright with her commitment towards pre-season, with the pair having worked together at international level previously.

She started at prop for the Broncos in their recent 14-0 trial win over Papua New Guinea and is part of a five-player rotating system in the side's engine room.

"I've never played at this weight or been as fit as I am now," Hall said.

"I won't go any smaller than I am now. I like the weight behind me with some muscle. I still have a cheat day every now and then but I am a lot more controlled than what I was last year."
