Former Balmain and Test fullback Garry Jack announces his retirement in order to coach Ryde-Eastwood in the Metropolitan Cup. Jack had originally hung up his boots at the end of 1992 but made a comeback in the 1995 season, playing 13 games for the Tigers.

NSWRL delegates walk out on the ARL’s annual general meeting because of a dispute with QRL directors over the election of the ARL chairman. Incumbent chairman John McDonald refuses to step down until the outgoing board has voted on the chairman’s position.

South Sydney patriarch George Piggins reveals he is backing a campaign to have club chairman Nick Pappas removed from the Rabbitohs’ board. Piggins says he will support a bid by former Souths Juniors chairman Henry Morris to assume the role.
