Democracy works for Broncos with players helping select leaders

The appointment of Alex Glenn as Broncos captain was four months in the making, the result of a democratic process that involved the players having key input in his elevation to the role.

When coach Anthony Seibold told former skipper Darius Boyd in September that he would not be captain in 2020 he did not move immediately to appoint Glenn as skipper.

Instead he sought feedback from the entire playing squad in initially settling on a seven-man leadership group of Glenn, Boyd, Pat Carrigan, Payne Haas, Tevita Pangai jnr, Matt Lodge and new recruit Brodie Croft.

Further consultation identified Glenn as the man to lead the club forward although the ultimate decision was taken by Seibold to anoint him as next captain.

It was only a fortnight ago that Seibold informed Glenn that he would have the ‘c’ next to his name in 2020.

Seibold said it was "in some ways unusual" to give players input into choosing the leadership team before explaining his rationale.

"I did that because I am a big believer in empowering leaders because when you empower leaders you make them accountable for their roles," Seibold said.

"That is one reasons they have all got different portfolios and different areas in our program that they are responsible for.

"We have been working as a group since coming back in November and I took the leaders away to Tasmania and we created a bit of a memory down there.

"I am trying to grow the group to knowing what we are going to get every single time we play and train."

Seibold said Glenn was "at the forefront" of driving those standards but would not be walking alone in that regard.

"I have some really good mechanisms that are going to support Lexi because it is a big job," Seibold said.

"There will be a lot of external distractions but one thing I know about Lexi is that he is going to narrow his focus to his footy and it will be all about his actions."

Seibold had the backing of Broncos CEO Paul White in the entire process of selecting the next club captain and leadership group.

"It has been a real considered approach and you get a feel for that with the timeline that it has taken to make this call,” White said on Friday while announcing Glenn's appointment.

"I have been really impressed with the way the guys have gone about it,and that leadership group as well. I have seen it coming but I didn’t know [of Glenn’s appointment] until two weeks ago."
