South Sydney hooker Damien Cook insists the attention around Latrell Mitchell's arrival at Redfern has created a rock star vibe but warns the star recruit needs time to settle into his new surroundings.

Mitchell was mobbed by fans after his 40-minute Charity Shield stint in Mudgee but was off limits to the media after his solid first-up outing.

Mitchell chalked up six carries in the first half with four tackle busts and a try assist as the Rabbitohs stormed home to win 26-14.

"I think with Latrell we just want him to enjoy his footy, we all know how much media attention he got in the off-season," Cook said.

"It would be nice to keep him away for a little bit. He's won a few premierships, is very experienced, but he's young and we've got to make sure he's still enjoying his footy.

"Once he's settled in and playing that I'm sure he'll be happy to speak to anyone. I thought he was really good, especially for the first real hitout we've had as a team.

"He's very good with numbers and confident with what he's doing. It's up to us to look back on him because he's got a lot going on.

"We've got to make sure we catch eyes with him because he's pointing us in the right direction."

Cook didn't want to compare Mitchell's arrival to that of the hysteria around Greg Inglis's popularity with the Rabbitohs' fan base but admitted the interest was there.

"I'll never compare them because it's not what he wants even though they've got a lot of similarities but they've got a presence about them," Cook said.

"Latrell's definitely got that. I've got a lot of respect for Latrell and how he carries himself for such a young player and what he's done already.

"He's so good with the community and has got a lot on his plate so we've just got to support him the best we can."

The Rabbitohs trailed 12-4 at half-time but their second-string side rallied to produce four tries in a 16-minute burst as they stretched their Charity Shield dominance to eight years.

Mago plants it down

The Rabbitohs pack was robbed of a mountain of experience with the departures of George Burgess (Super League), Sam Burgess and John Sutton (both retirement) in the off season but Liam Knight (124m), Hame Sele (112m) and Tom Amone (105m) answered the call in style.

"It was a good start, especially our middles, they went 40 straight at the start which I thought was a massive effort," Cook said.

"There's a bit of talent [out wide], that's all it is, with our forwards we've got to make sure we're laying a good platform. They're all individual superstars so if we can get them clicking as a team we're going to do well."

Jaydn Su'A was the only concern for the Rabbitohs after copping a head knock in the first half.
