Sharks player Bronson Xerri has been given the all-clear after tests for COVID-19 returned a negative result.

After presenting with flu-like symptoms on Thursday, in following full precautionary measures Xerri underwent the COVID-19 test in accordance with NRL and health authority protocols.

No other Sharks player has been tested for the virus.

The NRL announced on Friday that round one would proceed but next weekend's second round of the Telstra Premiership would be played in empty stadiums.

One of his teammates also displayed flu-like symptoms and was also isolated from training and the main player group ahead of Saturday night’s match against South Sydney at ANZ Stadium.

Neither player has travelled to or been in contact with anyone who has travelled to COVID-19 affected areas.

Cronulla doctor Paul Annett is monitoring the situation.

"We're in contact with Cronulla," NRL CEO Todd Greenberg said on Friday.

"If players have flu-like symptoms we want them tested. The priority is around those athletes and ensuring they're protected."
