The NRL has offered to assist in any criminal action taken by the unnamed Eels player who was filmed partaking "in an intimate act at a public venue" recently.

The player has been handed a $5000 breach notice by the NRL for bringing the game into disrepute after footage of a player with a woman was circulated on social media.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the NRL determined that the player had failed in his responsibility to avoid damaging the game's reputation.

The Eels released a statement last week to say the video had been filmed without either party's consent and that an attempt to "distribute the video to media outlets and on social media platforms" had been made.

The player involved has five business days to respond to the NRL's $5000 breach notice.

Welfare support and legal assistance would be provided by the NRL should the Eels player involved wish to pursue legal action.

"The NRL accepts the player is the alleged victim of an illegally filmed video and is offering both welfare support and assistance if he wishes to pursue criminal action against the individual who filmed the video," the statement said.

"The NRL has determined the player did not breach any other NRL rule nor is there any complaint about the conduct of the player.

"All players are public figures and have a responsibility to ensure their actions do not risk damaging the brand and reputation of the game.

"In this circumstance, the NRL believes the player failed in that responsibility."
