Cairns to host Cowboys 2022 opening trial

The North Queensland Toyota Cowboys will open their 2022 campaign with a pre-season trial clash against the South Sydney Rabbitohs in Cairns on Saturday, February 19.

Hosted by the Rabbitohs, the Barlow Park showdown will feature the best up and coming talent from both teams.

Some of the Cowboys most exciting young stars are expected to suit up, including forwards Tom Gilbert, Ben Condon and Griffin Neame as well as backs Daejarn Asi, Kane Bradley and Laitia Moceidreke.

The clash will be the Cowboys first official outing of 2022 and will be followed by a final pre-season tune-up a week later in Mackay.

While the Cowboys more established players will not feature in the trial, they will travel to Cairns to take part in school and hospital visits prior to the match.

“Cairns is an extremely important region for our club and has produced some of the finest players ever to pull on a Cowboys jersey. The latest batch to come through our Cairns academy in Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow, Heilum Luki and Jeremiah Nanai are three of the best young juniors in the game,” Cowboys General Manager of Football Micheal Luck said.

“We’re excited to travel up to Cairns to play in front of our members and fans from the Far North.

“We are also looking forward to working with the Northern Pride while we’re in Cairns as well as holding an open training session at Jones Park the day prior to the game.

“Whilst we may not be fielding our full-strength team, fans will still have the opportunity to watch some of our brightest young talents who will be champing at the bit to start 2022 on the best possible note and push for a spot in Todd’s Round 1 side.”

Cowboys members will receive a 20 per cent discount on general admission tickets. Tickets go on sale tomorrow (Thursday) and can be purchased at www.123tix.com.au.

Kickoff is set for 6pm (Qld).
