The opening round of the Pre-season Challenge saw plenty of action, a couple of thrilling finishes and left some questions unanswered ahead of Round 1.

NRL.com wraps up the round with the key talking points, highlights and recaps.

Pre-season Challenge Round 1 wrap

Broncos 24 drew with Titans 24 at Sunshine Coast Stadium

The main takeaways

  • Reece Walsh lived up to the hype in the first half with a flawless effort to leave everyone with plenty of optimism he can take the Broncos to a new level in 2023.
  • Titans coach Justin Holbrook will be no clearer on who will play in the halves alongside Kieran Foran for Round 1 but may have solved one dilemma with Jayden Campbell slotting in nicely at left centre.
  • David Fifita looked busy early in a positive sign for the Titans after a lacklustre 2022 season, running for over 120 metres from 10 carries.

Cowboys 22 drew with Dolphins 22 at Barlow Park, Cairns

The main takeaways

  • Isaiya Katoa started shaky but produced a sound performance in the halves to show why he's one of the game's next rising stars.
  • Young guns Tom Chester and Tom Duffy were strong for the Cowboys, making the most of opportunities with the football.
  • The Dolphins will need to hold on to the footy better after finishing with a 68 per cent completion rate. This is an area that won't please Bennett, who will want the side doing the basics in their maiden season.

  • St Helens will now prepare for a chance to become just the second English team to win the WCC in Australia when they meet the Panthers next Saturday night.

Panthers 22 def Eels 16, Saturday at BlueBet Stadium

  • Cronulla's back five all ran for more than 100 metres, with Daniel Atkinson, Thomas Rodwell, Mawene Hiroti, Kayal Iro and Sam Stonestreet all impressive in their first hit-out of the year.
  • The Knights' completion rate of 64 per cent (29 of 45) will be a concern for coach Adam O'Brien as will the 33 missed tackles.
