A moment to savour at Allianz Stadium in the 41st minute on Friday night as Alex Johnston grabbed his second try of the match and the 213th of his career to become the premiership's greatest ever tryscorer.

Now in his 13th season as a Rabbitoh, Johnston had the eyes of the rugby league world on him as he looked to take sole ownership of the record that has stood for more than five decades.

Fittingly the go-ahead try was a long-range cracker with David Fifita busting through before linking with Cameron Murray and Latrell Mitchell before Johnston raced 40 metres into history.

Irvine scored an incredible 171 tries in 178 games for North Sydney between 1958-70 before moving to Manly and racking up 41 tries in 60 games. He also won back-to-back premierships with the Sea Eagles in 1972-73.

Johnston also has a premiership to his name having bagged 21 tries in 18 games in his debut season in 2014 as the Bunnies broke a 43-year premiership drought.

The rivalry between the Rabbitohs and Roosters is as old as the game itself so it was fitting that AJ would claim the crown against the arch-enemy, against whom he has now scored 20 tries in 25 games.

The 31-year-old has also racked up 20 tries against next week's opponent Wests Tigers, who could be in for a busy night as they try to keep a clamp on the Rabbitohs' potent left edge.
