Inaugural Leagues Clubs Australia NRL Wheelchair Championships to ignite the Gold Coast

The fast-paced and inclusive sport of NRL Wheelchair Rugby League is set to reach new heights with the launch of the inaugural LCA NRL Wheelchair Championships, taking place from 31 October to 2 November 2025 at the Gold Coast Sports & Leisure Centre.

The landmark event will feature seven state and affiliate teams competing in a dynamic round-robin format for the coveted national title, showcasing the elite talent and growing participation in Wheelchair Rugby League across Australia.

The Championships mark a major milestone in the sport’s history, reflecting its rapid expansion and increasing accessibility.

The event also celebrates a formative partnership with Leagues Clubs Australia (LCA), which joins as the naming rights partner, reinforcing its commitment to inclusive sport and community development.

“These Championships are a historic first for our sport — a high impact showcase of athleticism, adrenaline with all the inclusive spirit that defines Rugby League," said Anna Fitzgerald, CEO NRL Wheelchair Rugby League.

"Our adapted game is open to all, proving that the heart of Rugby League beats just as strongly on wheels.

“We are grateful for the support of Leagues Clubs Australia who roll alongside us, to bring this Championships to life.”

LCA CEO, Don Hammond shared his delight with the partnership and closely aligned values.

“Licensed Clubs exist to serve and support their communities, and this partnership with the NRL Wheelchair Rugby League Championships is a perfect reflection of that mission.

We are proud to stand alongside the NRL in celebrating athletes of all abilities and ensuring that Rugby League truly is a game for everyone.”

The event is proudly supported by Experience Gold Coast, the Australian Sports
Commission, Astris PME and the NRL, bringing together key stakeholders to elevate Wheelchair Rugby League to a national sport.

“Hosting this national title showcases the incredible skills of these athletes and, at the same time, allows our city to demonstrate its commitment to inclusive participation,’’ said Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate.

“I urge all Gold Coasters to get courtside and cheer on Australia’s best Rugby League Wheelies.’’

Adding an international spotlight, the championships will be bookended by the Ashes Test Series, featuring Australia’s Wheelaroos and World Cup champions, England:

  • Thursday 30 October – Opening Ashes Test
  • Sunday 2 November – Closing Ashes Test following the Championship Final

These matches will provide fans with a thrilling display of world-class competition and further cement the Gold Coast as a premier destination for inclusive and elite sport.
