Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape travelled to Toowoomba over the weekend to watch the PNG Hunters take on the hometown Toowoomba Clydesdales.
Marape witnessed his country’s Hostplus Cup side, the PNG Hunters, claim their first win of the season in impressive fashion, with the Hunters producing a dominant 38-14 victory at Clive Berghofer Stadium.
The occasion delivered a strong show of support from the Papua New Guinean community in the region, with fans turning out in numbers to celebrate the vibrant atmosphere.
Their presence once again highlighted the deep connection between Papua New Guinea and rugby league, with the Hunters continuing to serve as a source of national pride. Thanks to the backing and support of PacificAus Sports who remain an accelerant towards the growth of rugby league in PNG.
The Prime Minister was joined by Toowoomba Mayor, Geoff McDonald, with the pair meeting during the game.
Discussions followed of the ongoing contribution of more than 5,000 Papua New Guinean workers across South West Queensland through the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility Scheme.
The scheme continues to strengthen economic and cultural ties between the two regions.
Marape’s visit also comes at a significant time for rugby league in Papua New Guinea, following the late 2025 announcement that the PNG Chiefs will enter the NRL in 2028.
The introduction of a national side into the competition is expected to further elevate the sport’s profile, with matches set to be played at Port Moresby’s prestigious Santos National Football Stadium.
With rugby league deeply embedded in the nation’s identity, the future of the game in Papua New Guinea continues to build momentum.
If the support shown in Toowoomba is any indication, the transition to an NRL team will be met with unwavering passion from a country united behind its side.
