Despite another week marred by off-field distractions, Broncos captain Adam Reynolds said he was focused on Easter Saturday opponents the Titans as his team prepared for another Queensland derby.
Coach Michael Maguire was forced to shuffle his backline after a knee injury to Grant Anderson suffered in the win over the Dolphins last round and the standing down of Josiah Karapani for an off-field indiscretion, a sanction imposed by the leadership group.
Gehamat Shibasaki Try
Gehamat Shibasaki, who came on for Anderson last week, has been named to start at centre, with Jesse Arthars earning a recall on the wing to play against his former club for his first game since Round 27 last year.
“Fell a little bit below team standards there and he's really apologetic Josiah, he knows he made an error there and unfortunate for him, but in saying that we got an opportunity with Jesse Arthurs to come back in,” Reynolds said.
For Round 5, Brisbane head down to a sold-out Cbus Super Stadium, with Reynolds keen to dispel any thoughts of complacency against a Titans side sitting near the bottom of the ladder, despite getting their first win last weekend.
“They're always good games, they're always tough games no matter where the teams are sitting on the ladder respectively,” Reynold said.
“It's another challenge for us, another opportunity for us to go out there and improve on what we've done the last couple of weeks.”
Broncos coach Michael Maguire agreed it could be a ‘danger game’, but confirmed his forward enforcer Payne Haas would return to line up in the front row against his brother Klese, who has also been named at prop.
“Every game is a tough game in our competition, it's how we turn up,” Maguire said.
“It's hyped up about the derby, so we are going down the highway to rip into our game.
“I feel the last couple of weeks the boys have definitely progressed in that space on how we know we can play. That's basically what we are chasing now.
“Payne will play, definitely. He is okay, the last two sessions he has been in all the sessions, so if you can do that, you are ready to go.
“It's nice to have Payne in, but it's nice to see the team do well with the depth of what we have from last week as well.
“Having someone like Payne coming back in, we know what Payne brings. He is a special man and a special player with the things he does for us, so he will add to us.
“I'm sure everyone is looking forward to seeing the two brothers come at each other. They will have bragging rights when they get to dinner.
“But we are pretty focused around what we want to do and Payne is a great addition to come in this week and build on what we have been doing.
“Every game, as you see by the competition, you have to make sure you all turn up and that's what we are chasing as a group.
“We have to turn up and build the game like we did last week and defend like we have because every team is out that there chasing that.
“We are no different. It's how we go about things.”
