NRL Late Mail Round 7: Crichton, Luai pushing to return

Team leaders Stephen Crichton, Jarome Luai and Adam Reynolds headline the list of players pushing to return from injury across a big weekend of footy.

Crichton has been named in the reserves for Canterbury's clash with the Eels, while Luai and Reynolds are set to face off when the Wests Tigers host the Broncos in a Saturday-night showdown at Campbelltown Sports Stadium.

A full house is expected, with Luai on track to start at five-eighth for the Tigers and Reynolds returning from a groin injury for Brisbane.

Following further medical assessment by an independent specialist, Broncos hooker Cory Paix will remain unavailable after suffering a head knock last week.

Cowboys: Reed Mahoney's bid to recover from a head knock has fallen short, with Soni Luke to start at hooker. Braidon Burns is on track to return from an ankle injury that forced him to miss last week's win over Brisbane. The winger will replace Murray Taulagi, who also suffered a head knock in Round 6. Scott Drinkwater will play his 150th game for the Cowboys.

Sea Eagles: Lock Jake Trbojevic is on track to take his place in the team despite suffering a nasty cut that forced him to lose vision in his right eye last week. Prop Siosiua Taukeiaho is also set to complete his comeback from a calf injury that has sidelined him since Round 1. Winger Jason Saab has scored six tries in his last three games against the Cowboys.

Dolphins: Brad Schneider is set to play a role off the bench after Kurt Donoghoe was ruled out with injury. Schneider wore No.14 in the Dolphins loss to Manly prior to last week's bye, but coach Kristian Woolf opted to inject Donoghoe into the contest instead. Jeremy Marshall-King also remains sidelined as he slowly works his way back to fitness from a knee injury.

Panthers: Izack Tago is set for his first chance in the top flight this season and will start in the centres in place of the suspended Casey McLean. It will be Tago's 100th NRL appearance. Penrith have been dealt a big blow with Liam Martin ruled out with a knee injury. The representative forward will be replaced by Luke Garner in the starting side, with Kalani Going the new face on the bench.

Rabbitohs: Former Dragon Matt Dufty is set for his first NRL game since Round 12, 2022 after receiving clearance to replace injured fullback Jye Gray in the No.1 jersey. South Sydney have also been dealt a blow with the loss of David Fifita to a hamstring injury. Lachlan Hubner comes into the back row. Roosters: Centre Billy Smith is pushing to return from a knee injury suffered in Round 4 and remains in the reserves for Sunday's clash. Hugo Savala will likely be the man to drop out if Smith returns to the fold. The Roosters are otherwise settled as they chase their third-straight victory.

Knights: Star recruit Dylan Brown is on track to complete his comeback from a knee injury suffered in Round 2 and will line up in the No.7 jersey alongside five-eighth Sandon Smith. Brown's return will force Fletcher Sharpe to shift to fullback and Fletcher Hunt into the centres as coach Justin Holbrook continues to navigate the absence of Kalyn Ponga and Bradman Best. Back-rower Thomas Cant is set to start in Dylan Lucas' place after the forward suffered a nasty throat injury, with Tyson Frizell (ribs) also unavailable.

Eels: Sean Russell is on track to return from a concussion as the Eels continue to deal with an overflowing casualty ward.
