NRL Late Mail Round 10: Hunt pushing to return; JMK back on deck

Brisbane veteran Ben Hunt has his sights on an early comeback from a knee injury in his side's clash with Manly.

The playmaker was not expected back for at least another fortnight but remains in the Broncos' extended squad and is pushing to return to the field in a Saturday night blockbuster at 4 Pines Park.

Elsewhere, Angus Crichton looks set to make a shock appearance for the Roosters, less than a week after injuring his MCL in a win over Brisbane.

Dolphins: Hooker Jeremy Marshall-King is on track for his first appearance of the season after completing a lengthy recovery from a freak knee injury in January. The dummy-half has been listed on the six-man interchange as coach Kristian Woolf eases him back into the fray. Kodi Nikorima will start after initially being named to come off the bench in his return from suspension, with Brad Schneider relinquishing the No.6 jumper in a halves combination with Isaiya Katoa. Kurt Donoghue was not named to play, with Woolf saying he needed some more time to be "100 percent confident" in his hamstring. “Kurt's a big player for us and he showed that last week, but I could tell with Kurt too, that he just wasn't 100% confident. We're a little bit healthier this week, that certainly helps, but just making sure that he is 100 percent confident and he can go and be the Kurt that we know … he's really important to us as a player, so, he'll be back next week.”

Bulldogs: Sitili Tupouniua has been named to start at second row but could trade places with Josh Curran as they did last weekend. The loss of Kurt Mann (concussion) and Jake Turpin (biceps) has seen Sean O'Sullivan and Harry Hayes come on to the bench, while youngster Alekolasimi Jones is set to play a greater role after making his NRL debut last week.

Roosters: Angus Crichton is pushing to take his place in the Roosters side despite suffering a medial injury in his knee last weekend. Cody Ramsey is set for his first start in the NRL since 2022 after coming off the bench last week to complete a remarkable comeback from ulcerative colitis. Ramsey replaces Mark Nawaqanitawase (ankle), while Spencer Leniu is set to start in the front row after Lindsay Collins was placed in the head knock protocol.

Titans: Young gun Zane Harrison is set for an NRL debut after impressing in the Witzer Pre-Season Challenge and the opening rounds of the Queensland Cup season. The NSW Under 19 representative will start at halfback, with Jayden Campbell shifting to five-eighth. An NRL debut is also coming for Jensen Taumoepeau after Siale Faeamani went down with a knee injury. Prop Klese Haas, hooker Oliver Pascoe and lock Cooper Bai are all set to start on Friday night as coach Josh Hannay rejigs his pack. Chris Randall moves to second row, with Arama Hau, Kurtis Morrin and Sam Verrills reverting to the interchange.

Cowboys: Jason Taumalolo will become the most capped Cowboy when he runs out for game No.295, surpassing former skipper Johnathan Thurston. Sam McIntyre has been added to the starting side after Jeremiah Nanai re-injured his shoulder, with the Samoan star facing another month on the sidelines. Emerging hooker Xavier Kerrisk is in the mix for an NRL debut after coming on to the six-man bench.

Eels: More injuries woes for the Eels, with Ryley Smith (sternum) and Will Penisini (Osteitis Pubis) ruled out of Friday's clash in Townsville. Tallyn Da Silva will start at hooker, while Jordan Samrani steps into the centres. Emerging playmaker Jonah Pezet made a successful return from injury in reserve grade last week but picked up a one-game suspension for a hip-drop and was unavailable for selection. That will see Ronald Volkman continue his partnership with representative halfback Mitchell Moses.

Dragons: Gerringong junior Dylan Egan is set for his first NRL game since Round 10, 2025, after making a successful comeback from an ACL tear in NSW Cup. Clint Gutherson is also on track to return from a hamstring injury and will slot straight back into the fullback role. Christian Tuipulotu remains in the extended squad as he looks to complete his comeback from a knee injury. Kade Reed will again partner Daniel Atkinson in the halves, with Kyle Flanagan on the six-man bench as the back up half/hooker.

Knights: No late changes expected for the Knights as they chase their first victory at WIN Stadium since 2011. Kalyn Ponga has scored five tries in his last four games against the Dragons and will look to build on last week's successful return from injury.

Rabbitohs: A host of changes for the Rabbitohs as some players return from injury and others are struck down. Jack Wighton was sent for surgery on a broken arm, prompting Campbell Graham to shift to the centres for his 150th NRL game and Ed Kosi coming on to the wing for his Rabbitohs debut. Fullback Jye Gray is on track to return from a shoulder injury, while Ashton Ward comes into the halves in place of Jamie Humphreys. Up front, Euan Aitken is back in the starting side after coming off the bench in the last two weeks. Keaon Koloamatangi moves to prop, with Tevita Tatola shifting to the bench.

Sharks: No late changes expected for Cronulla with Jesse Ramien and Ronaldo Mulitalo at least a week away from returning from knee injuries. Sifa Talakai remains in the centres as a result and is preparing for an intense one-on-one battle with Latrell Mitchell. Braden Uele is the new face on the interchange as he chases his third NRL appearance of the season.

Sea Eagles: Jamal Fogarty is on track to complete his comeback from a groin injury that kept him out of last week's loss to Penrith. Young gun Joey Walsh will come into the side if Fogerty's return is delayed. Ethan Bullemor is set to start in the front row after Kobe Hetherington was placed in the head knock protocol.

Broncos: Ben Hunt remains in the reserves as he chases an early return from a knee injury suffered in Round 5. Hunt's return would provide a major boost for the injury-hit Broncos, who have lost Adam Reynolds, Deine Mariner and Kotoni Staggs to injury and suspension from last week's loss to the Roosters. Tom Duffy has been named in the No.7 jersey but could make way if Hunt plays. Jesse Arthars is set to replace Staggs in the centres, while young gun Antonio Verhoeven comes on to the wing. Brisbane have not won at 4 Pines Park since 2010. Josiah Karapani has been named, but did not train earlier in the week, with medical staff to monitor his progress from an ankle injury.

Storm: Star halfback Jahrome Hughes is on track to complete his comeback from a head knock after progressing through the concussion protocols and will replace the injured Tyran Wishart (ankle). Emerging playmaker Stanley Huen has been named on the six-man bench and could make his NRL debut if called upon.

Wests Tigers: More changes for the Tigers as Benji Marshall navigates two more injuries suffered in last week's loss to the Sharks. Jock Madden is back in the halves after Adam Doueihi dislocated his shoulder. Kai Pearce-Paul's return from concussion offsets the loss of Samuela Fainu to a long-term foot injury. Sione Fainu will join Pearce-Paul in the back row, replacing Tony Sukkar. Out wide, Heath Mason comes in at fullback, Sunia Turuva will shift to the wing and Patrick Herbert has earned a recall in the centres.

Last updated:

Raiders: Ethan Strange is on track to return from an ankle injury that forced him out of last week's win over the Titans. The five-eighth's comeback will see Kaeo Weekes return to fullback and Daine Laurie shift to the bench. Hudson Young will return from suspension, replacing the injured Joe Roddy (hand). Jayden Brailey has been named at lock but could trade places with Morgan Smithies, as was the case last week.

Panthers: Premiership-winning forward Liam Henry is on track for his first taste of NRL action this year and comes on to the interchange after recovering from an off-season knee injury. Jack Cole replaces the suspended Jack Cogger and will wear the No.14 jumper. No other changes expected for the competition leaders.
