After pledging his allegiance to England, Titans star AJ Brimson had shifted his focus away from State of Origin, but recent eligibility changes have reignited his chances.
Brimson insists an Origin return isn't his priority but as Queensland look to select their first six-man bench in Origin, Brimson’s versatility could put him on the
radar of Maroons coach Billy Slater and his selectors.
Having played fullback at both Origin and Test level, Brimson is relishing his current role in the centres but he believes Tonga international Robert Toia is the man for the job after marking up against him in Gosford last Friday.
“It was a fun battle against him. He’s a good fella and a good player, so I think he’ll probably get the nod," Brimson said.
Toia too good
“It’s cool to be in contention again, but I’m just focused on doing my role for the team at the moment.
Brimson is not the only one who’s been impressed with Toia of late either, with Roosters coach Trent Robinson giving glowing reviews of his centre too.
Robinson highlighted the impact of former Maroons captain Daly Cherry Evans on Toia's strong form.
“It’s a young edge, and Daly’s been really selfless. He’s fed Bobby (Toia) all year, and he’s started the season really well," Robinson said.
While Origin interest is escalating ahead of the May 27 series opener at Accor Stadium, Brimson’s focus is directed on Magic Round.
“It’s always a lot of fun up there and I’m super keen to wear the Chargers jersey,” he said, referring to the retro jersey the Titans will wear in Sunday's match against the Knights.
After making their NRL debuts last weekend, Brimson believes that halfback Zane Harrison and winger Jensen Taumoepeau will be up for the occasion as they play in front of the biggest crowd of their careers.
“They were both really good for us. Zane was really controlled in attack and Jensen carried the ball super hard,” he said.
Taumoepeau was the subject of an emotional jersey presentation, with Sharks winger Ronaldo Mulitalo speaking passionately about his character and journey.
“It’s the greatest honour of my career so far to present a jersey to someone I love," Mulitalo said.
"He’s been through a lot, and this jersey’s a testament to his perseverance and heart. He never gives up, and that’s a person you want to be in battle with."
Mulitalo will make his first appearance of the season for Cronulla on Friday night against the Bulldogs after suffering an ACL injury while playing for the Kiwis during the Pacific Championships last October.
