‘Wow’: Sergis blown away by rare shot at history

Perennial Blues matchwinner Jessica Sergis will be looking to deliver even more in the final 2026 Origin contest as NSW hunt for a rare clean sweep at Cbus Super Stadium on May 28.

The 28-year-old’s try and try assist proved the difference in Game II, but the Blues right side defence will need to improve to better contain Maroons breakout centre Rory Owen, who scored a try and had two line breaks for the home side.

“(Game II) was messy, so we’ve got a lot to improve on and I’m glad we held them out in those last few minutes,” Sergis said.

“It was a weird game. It felt like we did some good things and we had some errors in us, but that’s footy I suppose.

“Rory’s an amazing player and I think she did really well, but I’m really stoked with my team and how we held them out.

“I was happy to get points on the board, but it’s a team effort and defence really wins us those games.”

Sergis said she was now ‘super-pumped’ to turn to the unfinished business of securing the ‘Blue-wash’ they let slip in 2025.

No team has managed to secure a cleansweep since Women's State of Origin was expanded to a three-match series in 2024.

The achievement would be the first time any NSW team has secured a 3-0 State of Origin series result since 2000.

Berry saves the game

“Wow. I didn’t know it was that long, so I’ll definitely be taking that in and letting the girls know, but we definitely want to give them nothing so that will be the goal going into Game III,” Sergis said.

“It would be very special. We’ve worked on it a lot as a squad getting to know each other off the field as well which has really helped us on the field and we’ve got a great group of girls here and I think we just want to do them all proud and all the staff proud as well.

“They put in so much time and effort into our training block, so we want to do it for them and obviously our state.”

Blues coach John Strange has named an unchanged side for Origin III, while the Maroons have been forced to make several key changes due to injuries.

Captain and fullback Tamika Upton has been ruled out with a shoulder injury while star winger Julia Robinson, the 2025 IRL Golden Boot winner, is nursing a foot problem.

They have been replaced by Fetu Samoa fullback Destiny Mino-Sinapati, who plays for the Titans, and Dragons recruit Shenae Ciesiolka.

Prop Mackenzie Weale is also out due to injury, with Kiwi Ferns international Otesa Pule to start in the frontrow and Lillian Yarrow called up to take her place on the interchange bench.
