Four years after his State of Origin debut ended in heartbreak, Kotoni Staggs is back in blue... older, more experienced and believing he’s finally ready for his moment.

The damaging Broncos centre earned a recall for Game One after forcing his way back into the Blues conversation through consistent form during the past 18 months.

For Staggs, the selection means more than just a jersey.

It’s proof of how far he’s come, not just as a footballer, but as a person.

“I’m proud of where I’ve come,” Staggs said.

“When I look back to when I first got selected in the team, I was still young, still learning the game and learning who I was as a person.

“I knew it would come back one day.

I knew if I kept playing good footy and stayed on the right track, the opportunity would come again, and I’m grateful Laurie gave me the call

Kotoni Staggs

Staggs made his Origin debut in Game One, 2022 but suffered a shoulder injury 52 minutes into the match with the Blues trailing 12-4 before going on to lose 16-10.

Now, after years of waiting, he gets another shot.

During the past 18 months, the 27-year-old has become one of the game’s elite centres, winning a premiership with Brisbane, claiming Dally M Centre of the Year and earning a Kangaroos call-up for the tour of England.

The house that Staggs built!

It’s why many believe Staggs is built for the Origin arena.

The boy from Wellington plays with aggression, emotion and competitiveness, traits that perfectly suit the biggest stage in rugby league.

At Accor Stadium on Wednesday night, Staggs says he’s ready to embrace all of it.

“When you cross that white line, it’s game time,” he said.

“It’s the love for the game, the passion for it, and just loving being competitive.

“I take it personally whoever is in front of me. I want to be better than them.”
