NRL Late Mail Round 19: All eyes on Origin stars; Deardon eyes return

All eyes will be on the State of Origin stars this weekend as clubs weigh up whether to roll out their big guns following Wednesday's gripping decider at Suncorp Stadium.

Roosters fullback James Tedesco and Dolphins centre Jack Bostock are set to miss their clubs' Round 19 games after suffering head knocks during the match.

Warriors duo Mitch Barnett and Kurt Capewell have also dropped out of the squad for their side's clash with the Wests Tigers on Friday night.

A host of other players have been named on extended squads, with coaches to make a final call over the coming days.

Dolphins: Jack Bostock was one of five Origin stars named in the reserves for the Dolphins, but the NSW winger is set to miss Saturday's clash after suffering a head knock. Maroons quartet Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow, Selwyn Cobbo, Max Plath and Thomas Flegler will be monitored before a final decision is made. Bostock's absence will likely see Jake Averillo remain at centre, while winger Tevita Naufahu will make way if Cobbo returns. Interchange forward Ray Stone is also on track to line up after missing last week's loss to Newcastle due to soreness.

Sharks: Queensland forward Briton Nikora left the field late on Wednesday for an HIA. The back-rower passed the test and returned to the action but the Sharks were already considering resting Nikora and he will likely drop out of the extended squad. NSW duo Blayke Brailey and Addin Fonua-Blake have also been listed in the reserves, with Brailey expected to back up and a final decision on Fonua-Blake to be made closer to game day.

Bulldogs: Captain Stephen Crichton played the full 80 minutes for NSW on Wednesday night and looks set to take his place at five-eighth for the Bulldogs on Saturday. Jacob Preston remains in the extended squad and could make his return from a broken arm after coach Cameron Ciraldo opted not to rush him back before last week's bye. Preston's inclusion would likely see Josh Curran shift to the interchange. Jacob Kiraz is also pushing to overcome a rib injury and remains in the side on the wing.

Raiders: Both Hudson Young and Ethan Strange got through the Origin decider unscathed, with the pair likely to back up for Canberra's must-win clash with the Bulldogs. Strange did battle an ankle injury in the lead up to the match but was not hampered in his 15 minutes on the field. In a double boost, both Josh Papalii and Noah Martin are on track to return from injury and will provide added punch up front.

Roosters: Coach Trent Robinson has options as he looks to replace James Tedesco, who suffered a head knock on the stroke of half-time in Wednesday's Origin decider. Cody Ramsey started at fullback when Tedesco was last unavailable and could come straight into the starting side, however the coach could also opt for young gun Rex Bassingthwaite or a bigger backline reshuffle that would see Billy Smith of Mark Nawaqanitawase shift to fullback. As for the Roosters' remaining Origin players, Sam Walker and Reece Robson are in the reserves and could come into the side and Nawaqanitawase was named on the wing. Club legend Daniel Tupou is set to make his 300th NRL appearance in his return from a calf injury.

Eels: Expect halfback Mitchell Moses to back up after helping NSW prevail on Wednesday, with Ronald Volkman to remain at five-eighth. Moses' return will see emerging playmaker Jonah Pezet drop back to the reserves. Araz Nanva is set to start at centre after Sean Russell was ruled out with a quad injury.

Sea Eagles: Tolu Koula played 41 minutes off the bench in Wednesday's Origin clash and is likely to back up at centre for Manly on Sunday afternoon. The NSW talent replaces Clayton Faulalo, who injured his hamstring last week. Josh Feledy will come into the side if Koula drops out. Haumole Olakau'atu was not used by NSW coach Laurie Daley in the decider and will take his place in the Sea Eagles starting side.

Cowboys: Tom Dearden is in the mix for his first game since injuring his ankle in Round 10 and remains in the reserves. Skipper Reuben Cotter, back-rower Jeremiah Nanai and winger Murray Taulagi have all been named to back up from Origin III, with coach Todd Payten preparing for the trio to play on Sunday. "The intention is for them all to play," Payten said. "We will know pretty much in the hour or two after the game on Wednesday night after they are assessed. Things are also looking promising for Tom Dearden."

Storm: Queensland trio Harry Grant, Cam Munster and Trent Loiero have all been named to back up from Origin. Grant was used off the bench following Game Two and Craig Bellamy could repeat that strategy on Sunday night. The cavalry are returning for Melbourne, halfback Jahrome Hughes (hamstring) and centres Nick Meaney (calf) and Jack Howarth (quad) all on track to return to the field this weekend.

Titans: Maroons duo Tino Fa'asuamaleaui and Jojo Fifita have also been named to back up and got through Wednesday's clash unscathed so are expected to take their place in the Titans side. Cooper Bai is on track to return from a concussion while former Storm winger Dean Iremia is set to play his first NRL match since 2024 in place of Jaylan De Groot.
