NRL Late Mail: Round 22 - Katoa unlikely; Bateman hamstrung

The Cowboys and Roosters have both been forced to make changes ahead of a Thursday night blockbuster in Townsville.

Back-rower John Bateman was in line for just his fourth game of the season but pulled out on Wednesday after his hamstring flared up during captain's run.

"It's just a smart decision [to leave him out]," coach Todd Payten said. "It didn't go but he was aware of it. We gave him every opportunity to play but he just came up short."

The Roosters, meanwhile, have travelled north without centre Billy Smith, who has battled illness this week and was unable to train.

Cowboys: Englishman John Bateman has withdrawn after experiencing tightness in his hamstring during Wednesday's captain's run so Kai O'Donnell comes into the 19. After coming off the bench last week, Tom Mikaele is back in the starting side in place of Griffin Neame (suspended). Soni Luke also moves into the starting side at hooker with Reed Mahoney suffering a Category 1 head knock last week.

Roosters: Centre Billy Smith has been unable to train due to illness so the versatile Hugo Savala steps up. A shoulder injury to champion winger Daniel Tupou sees Tommy Talau come in for just his third game of the season. The Roosters have won four from four at Queensland Country Bank Stadium.

Dragons: Just the one change to Dean Young's 19-man squad with Moses Suli joining the bench in place of Emre Guler. A try double in NSW Cup last weekend earned Suli a recall for first NRL game since Round 14. Tyrell Sloan has scored five tries in his last five games.

Dolphins: Gun playmaker Isaiya Katoa is listed among the reserves as he looks to return after three games out with a wrist injury. Brad Schneider has been named at halfback and looks set to steer the ship again with Katoa likely to be held back for one more week. “It is good to see him back on the field, but I think he is another week away,” hooker Jeremy Marshall-King said. “You don’t want to rush him back for him to get injured again." The return of centre Jack Bostock from concussion sees Selwyn Cobbo go back to the wing.

Wests Tigers: After admitting on Thursday that he "lost my head a little bit" and "definitely should have played last week", Adam Doueihi will be out to make good when he starts at halfback this week. Youngster Javon Andrews drops to the reserves after debuting last week in Doueihi's absence. Young gun Heamasi Makasini is back in the centres so Sunia Turuva moves out to the wing. Turuva has scored seven tries in his last five games against the Eels.

Eels: A big in for the Eels with prop Junior Paulo ready to go for career game No.275 as he returns from a knee injury that has sidelined him since Round 11. The loss of Luca Moretti to concussion brings Kelma Tuilagi into the starting side for Jason Ryles.
