Why Kumuls pioneer is backing Luai to make an impact in PNG

Fifty years after Papua New Guinea’s first rugby league captain helped lead the country onto the international stage, another No.1 is now starting a new chapter in the game’s history.

PNG Chiefs player No.001 Jarome Luai, who will play for Samoa against the Kumuls in Port Moresby during Rugby League World Cup 2026, has signed a five-year partnership with Pepsi PNG, becoming the face of the brand in Papua New Guinea.

The partnership, which was announced 50 days from the Kumuls opening World Cup match against Lebanon at Santos National Stadium on October 17, brings together two important chapters of PNG rugby league history.

Pacific Industries Limited chairman Paul Chue, who was Kumul No.001 and captained PNG’s first national rugby league team in 1975, announced the partnership.

Chue's historic role as Kumul No.001 and Luai’s new position as PNG Chiefs player No.001 are separated by 50 years, but both carry an important message for the future of rugby league in PNG.

He said it was a proud moment for his family, Pacific Industries and Pepsi PNG.

“Now, 50 years later, Luai becomes PNG Chiefs No.001,” Chue said.

“Both represent landmark moments in the history of rugby league in PNG, and both share a genuine commitment to inspiring the next generation and supporting the continued growth of the game.”

Chue said Luai’s personal journey was another reason the partnership was special.

The former NRL premiership-winning five-eighth grew up in difficult circumstances before becoming one of the game's recognised players and leaders.

“Jarome’s story is one of overcoming adversity,” he said.

“Growing up in tough circumstances with not a lot and still rising to become a leader in the game is a story many young Papua New Guineans can relate to and be inspired by.”

PNG: A Rugby League Nation emerges

He said the sport provides hope and a positive pathway for young people while bringing communities together.

The partnership comes at an important time for PNG rugby league, with the country preparing for the arrival of the Chiefs in the NRL in 2028.

Luai, who was announced as the Chiefs’ first player signing, has already become a major figure in the club’s plans and its connection with Papua New Guinea.

Chue said having Luai as the face of Pepsi PNG reflects the company’s commitment to using sport to inspire communities and develop young people.

Luai said he was proud to join the Pepsi and Pacific Industries family.

“I’m incredibly proud to join the Pepsi and Pacific Industries family,” Luai said.

“Their commitment to supporting young people and giving back to communities across Papua New Guinea is something I really connected with, and I’m excited to be part of it.”

The five-year partnership gives Luai another strong connection with PNG, where he is expected to play an important role in the country's new NRL era.
