Teitzel ready to tough it out after Broncos hit their straps for finals

After setting a winning tone for her side and putting in a player of the match performance, Broncos forward Romy Teitzel is determined to keep that momentum rolling.

The stage is now set for another Queensland derby, taking on Gold Coast Titans in a preliminary final, where a win will see them have a shot at defending their 2025 title.

Teitzel starred for Brisbane and put her body in the line in their dominant 40-16 opening Finals Week One win over her former club Newcastle, with an aggressive kick-chase rewarded with a try in the opening minute.

She also copped a few knocks for her efforts – including some friendly fire from fellow forward Chelsea Lenarduzzi – with both finishing the game with some good old fashioned strapping tape adorning their heads.

“I don't know if anyone's ever been split twice in a game, but just my luck to do so,” Teitzel said with a laugh after the game.

“(But) we had a big game to play for, we spoke about it all week.

“We had great training sessions and we've created some great momentum going in the back of the season.

“We know finals are hard and Newcastle's a great side.

“They've been in the grand final many times.

“They've won premierships, and I think people underestimate them a little bit, so we knew we were out for a tough game.

“That first try, that was all Robbo [Julia Robinson].

“She made a great hit and I was just there to pick up the scraps and was very lucky.

“It comes from those small efforts and that's something we've really prided ourselves on all year is those one percent efforts and your kick-chase is so important.

“It starts your set and gets Tamika (Upton) in a great position as well to receive that ball in a good position and attack the line.”

While the side had some mixed form in the lead up to their Knights encounter, Brisbane were switched on from the get-go, with the forwards in particular laying the platform.

“The girls just worked super hard," the representative second rower said. 

“I'm really proud of our middles.

“We spoke about being dominant there and working together, tightening up as a defensive line and really driving ourselves off our defence.

“We know we can attack from anywhere on the field and I'm really proud of the girls.

“We're a great team, and I thought we showed that.”

This Sunday at Cbus Super Stadium, the Broncos will need to bring their A-game for the full 70, after both sides were guilty of playing only one good half of football each in their Round 8 clash won 28-20 by the Titans.

“I think Murph's [coach Karyn Murphy] done a great job with those girls,” Teitzel said.

“They recruited really well in the off-season.

“They have always been a gritty team and worked for each other.

“In the past years, they've been pretty unfortunate with some injuries, but they're a great team full of also great experience and very flash.

“So, we will prepare to go down there and play another tough game and it'll come down to 70 minutes.”
