Biography:

A local South Sydney junior, John Sutton stuck by his beloved club despite reaching the finals just once in his first eight NRL seasons.

But his loyalty paid off in spades as the Rabbitohs reemerged as a heavyweight team. He captained the club to its 21st premiership in 2014.

Equally at home at five-eighth or in the back-row, Sutton's big body combined with deft ball-playing skills made him a tricky customer to handle.

He was considered mightily unlucky never to represent NSW having been 18th man on several occasions. While two City Origin games and a Prime Minister's XIII match were his only representative honours, Sutton carved out an illustrious career all the same.

In 2019, before his final NRL season, Sutton - the first man to play 300 premiership games for South Sydney - became the inaugural Rabbitoh to have a Testimonial Match, which was held at the hallowed Redfern Oval.
