Melbourne’s Rectangular Stadium will now be known as AAMI Park, thanks to a new landmark agreement with Australian insurance company AAMI, Sports Minister James Merlino said today.
Mr Merlino said the insurer – part of the Suncorp Group – had secured its place in Melbourne’s sporting history with an eight-year naming rights deal for the $267.5 million stadium.
The stadium is the latest jewel in the crown of Melbourne’s sporting infrastructure and will be the new home of soccer, rugby league and rugby union in Victoria and will open on Friday, 7 May.
“Victorians love their sport and AAMI Park is the latest addition to a first-class suite of sporting infrastructure that is the envy of any city in the world,” Mr Merlino said.
"The Victorian Government continues to invest in key infrastructure projects to give Victoria the edge and ensure we continue to attract the major sporting events Melbourne is renowned for.
“AAMI Park – home of the Melbourne Storm, Melbourne Victory and Melbourne Rebels – will be one of the world’s finest stadiums to watch rectangular codes.
“AAMI is a great supporter of Victorian sport and communities – whether it’s the Victoria Derby, Kooyong Classic or their support of the Victorian SES – AAMI is a strong contributor to our state and this new agreement provides a great boost to Victoria’s major sporting events calendar.”
The Melbourne and Olympic Parks Trust finalised the eight-year agreement this week in time for the blockbuster opening between rugby league heavyweights Australia and New Zealand.
Suncorp Personal Insurance Chief Executive Officer Mark Milliner said the company is a proud supporter of Victorian sport and the naming rights agreement is an exciting new partnership.
“We are very proud to be associated with what will no doubt become another iconic Melbourne landmark, in Australia’s premier sports and entertainment precinct,” Mr Milliner said.
“We congratulate the Victorian Government on its vision in the development of this world-class stadium which will bring elite rectangular sports and entertainment to Victorians and visitors.”
Melbourne and Olympic Parks Trust Chairman Russell Caplan welcomed the new deal.
“We are delighted to welcome AAMI as a precinct partner – this is a new and exciting chapter for us as together we open this spectacular, purpose built stadium,” Mr Caplan said.
“AAMI Park is an impressive addition to our suite of world class venues. It further cements our status as Australia’s premier sports and entertainment precinct.”
AAMI Park will have capacity for over 30,000 patrons and feature a cutting edge 'bio-frame' roof design providing extensive seat coverage and excellent spectator sight lines. It will also feature a sports campus with medical facilities and administration offices.
