Tonight’s Country-City clash has put the spotlight on a CRL initiative which has seen AAMI deliver more than $50,000 directly to Rugby League clubs in regional areas.

In the countdown to the traditional Country-City match, at Port Macquarie’s Regional Sports Stadium, the long-time supporter of Rugby League in the bush confirmed its popular AAMI Player of the Week and Club of the Week awards would continue throughout the 2010 NSW Country Rugby League season.

The initiative will each week see a $250 Harvey Norman gift voucher awarded to the AAMI Player of the Week and a $1,000 grant given to the player’s club.

Since 2007, the AAMI Player of the Week has recognised the individual contributions of more than 50 CRL players and delivered more than $50,000 in grants to Rugby League clubs throughout regional and rural NSW.

“Rugby League is a great game and has a very proud history throughout country New South Wales,” Country coach, Laurie Daley, said today.

“As a country boy myself, I know first-hand the importance of Rugby League in the bush and it’s initiatives like this that help develop and nurture the game’s grass roots.

“The AAMI Player and Club of the Week are important because they not only recognise players for the impression they make on the field, but also for their involvement and commitment off the field.

“The rewards for the players and clubs can make a real difference in the bush and I would encourage fans to vote and everyone playing in CRL competitions to work towards being nominated.”

Nominations for the AAMI Player of the Week are open to CRL players of all ages, with fans asked to nominate players for their involvement, outstanding contribution or on-field skill, each week at www.crlnsw.com.au.

“AAMI is passionate about Rugby League in country New South Wales and is proud to be supporting the game in these communities,” AAMI’s Executive Manager Personal Insurance, John Bennetts, said.

“The AAMI Player of the Week and Club of the Week are a key part of our AAMI Grants Program which is now in its sixth year.

“These two weekly awards allow us to help clubs recognise the outstanding contributions and achievements of players on a regular basis, while the AAMI Country Championships and AAMI Country-City match help showcase some of Rugby League’s rising and biggest stars.”

Winners of the AAMI Player of the Week and Club of the Week awards are announced each week during 2BG’s Continuous Call Team broadcast.
