NSW assistant and State of Origin legend Brad Fittler has backed the NRL in the ongoing debate over the sin-binning of four players in Origin II on Wednesday night, saying the referees got it right.

Fittler, who was on the field at Suncorp Stadium trying to defuse tensions, told the SportsFan Clubhouse that while he sympathises with traditionalists who bemoan the direction the game is heading he feels the recent crackdown on fighting is for the greater good.

"I understand what Laurie Daley and Mal [Meninga] were talking about [after the game], but we're playing under different rules now," Fittler told the panel.

"I know we only changed them a couple of weeks ago and around a crucial time of the year, but it's also the time when more people watch this game than anytime else."
