Dr Ron Muratore has today announced he will leave the NRL after more than six years as the organisation’s Chief Medical Officer.

Dr Muratore has played a key role in supporting the NRL through key reforms such as improving the management of concussion and banning the shoulder charge.

He has also been part of expanding the testing program to include prescription drugs.

The NRL is using this season to develop a baseline for understanding the use of prescription drugs amongst players.

“I have enjoyed the contribution I have been able to make to the game of Rugby League over the past six years and feel proud of the many significant achievements regarding player welfare,” Dr Muratore said.

Head of Football Todd Greenberg thanked Dr Muratore for his service to the NRL and particularly his commitment to improving player health and safety.

“Dr Muratore has been instrumental in supporting the NRL over the past six years as we made significant improvements to the safety of the game,” Mr Greenberg said.

“We have been extremely grateful to Dr Muratore for the valuable contribution that he has made in his role as CMO and for his commitment to player welfare.”

Dr Muratore will finish in the role on October 31 but continue his clinical and medico legal practice.
