Broncos great Steve Renouf.

The North Queensland Cowboys are favourites in many pundits books to win the Telstra Premiership but Queensland legend Steve Renouf says the club must start banking more wins earlier in the season to make their task in September more achievable.

The Cowboys have never finished in the top two or hosted a preliminary final in Townsville. The club has a history of giving itself a massive challenge and then rising to the occasion, as they did last year with their sensational run during the finals.

"They need to win a lot of games early," Renouf said in this week’s NRL Podcast.

"I came from a club [at the Broncos] where we were the opposite. We'd bank wins early and prided ourselves on [saying] 'this is where we need to be by June'.

"That is what they need to do. Forget about this coming from behind. That is great when you are the  underdogs, but they are now noted as they number one or number two team in the comp."

Renouf covers a wide variety of topics in the podcast including whether Matt Lodge can make the most of his Brisbane lifeline, the impact Bryce Cartwright will have at the Titans and whether the Broncos have lost their aura.

The Broncos legend analyses the impact of taking a State of Origin game to Adelaide, discusses whether the United States should be revisited as a host for Origin and has forthright views on whether Todd Carney and Dave Taylor can reboot their NRL careers via the Intrust Super Cup.
