The Holden State of Origin Series was launched today in Melbourne, as the interstate series prepares to head back to the MCG for the first time since 2015.

Brydens Lawyers NSW Blues coach Brad Fittler and captain Boyd Cordner, as well as Queensland Maroons coach Kevin Walters and captain Cameron Smith, attended the launch in Melbourne today, along with NRL CEO Todd Greenberg.

“There is nothing like Origin in the Australian sporting landscape and it will be wonderful to see the series head back to the MCG for Game One,” Mr Greenberg said.

“Melbourne and Victoria embraced the event in 2015 and I’m sure we will see similar support from locals, as well as from travellers from NSW and Queensland.

“The talent and sheer ferocity of Origin sets it apart from anything else in the country and no doubt this series will be another reminder of what a remarkable sporting rivalry this is.

“Nothing hits you like State of Origin and I’m sure Melbourne and the rest of the country will be enthralled by the spectacle yet again this year.”

The 2018 Holden State of Origin Series will kick off on June 6 at the MCG, followed by Game Two – on a stand alone Sunday night – at ANZ Stadium on June 24, and Game Three at Suncorp Stadium on July 11.

Maroons coach Kevin Walters said: “The MCG is an amazing venue and it will be an absolute privilege to play the opening game of this year’s series here.

“It will be a special occasion, not just for the players but for Melbourne fans and those who travel from interstate to watch their teams.

“From our perspective, we will be doing everything we possibly can to get our preparation right for such a crucial game.”

Blues Coach Brad Fittler said: “I’m so glad other Rugby League players will get to experience playing on the MCG as I did - the biggest stadium in Australia for the biggest sporting rivalry in Australia.”
