Daniel Mortimer announces retirement

Former Sydney Roosters premiership winner Daniel Mortimer has retired at the age of 29.

The versatile son of former Canterbury premiership-winning Peter Mortimer used Instagram to announce his decision to hang up his boots.

"I've been so damn lucky to live my dream. It has been an amazing ride. Cannot wait until the next chapter ... whatever that may be," he wrote in his farewell post.

Mortimer made his NRL debut in 2009 and was an integral part of Parramatta's stunning charge to the grand final from eighth spot in his rookie season.

He played 48 matches with the Eels, mainly at five-eighth, before switching to the Roosters in 2012. He was their bench utility, covering hooker and the halves, in the grand final triumph over Manly the following year.

Mortimer spent three seasons with the Gold Coast before playing two matches at Cronulla in 2017 until making a mid-season switch to Leigh in the English Championship.

He backed up for the Centurions again this year but has decided to call it quits after 19 matches at the club.

He finishes with 104 points from 21 tries and 10 goals from his 128 games in the NRL plus an appearance for the Prime Minister's XIII in 2015. He also captained the Newtown Jets to their grand final win in the Intrust Super Premiership NSW in 2012.

Former teammates Jared Waerea-Hargreaves, Joel Reddy, Eric Grothe, Konrad Hurrell and Nate Myles were among the many who wished Mortimer well on Instagram following his announcement.
